What drives me crazy about the use of water for datacenters is that it isn’t necessary. Unlike growing crops where the water is a non-negotiable requirement of the endeavor just by its very nature, you can cool a datacentre without continuously consuming water.

It just so happens that by a completely insane series of circumstances it’s the cheapest way to do so. You could run the servers in the datacenters at a lower power limit. You could use non-evaporative cooling. You could build the datacentre in a colder or less arid climate. But no, all of those options either cost slightly more or generate slightly less money, so they aren’t even considered. Couple that with the fact that a significant proportion of that consumption is in service of prompts that no end user ever actively asked for, like the LLMs responses being generated many thousands of times per second by Google searches. It’s just this utterly pointless pissing away of resources.

What compression settings are you using for each? If you’re just accepting defaults it’s quite possible you’re comparing against a lossless webp, which is quite likely to be larger than jpeg at typical quality settings.

Society equating depression with sadness is a great disservice to the condition. It’s quite common for it to present as just … nothing. An emotional void where you might expect emotions to be. Things that would be expected to make you happy just don’t. Things that would make you sad, the same. Your feelings are depressed in the sense that their impact is just muted across the board.

A lack of motivation is also a very common indicator. You’re just missing the drive to do something because the emotional rewards that you expect to happen when you accomplish your goals just aren’t there.

They had a reveal trailer as part of the PlayStation State of Play back in May, and basically the entire internet collectively lost all interest the moment it revealed that it was a 5v5 hero shooter.

There is analogous functionality for most of it, though it’s generally not quite as good across the board.

FSR is AMD’s answer to DLSS, but the quality isn’t quite as good. However the implementation is hardware agnostic so everyone can use it, which is pretty nice. Even Nvidia’s users with older GPUs like a 1080 who are locked out of using DLSS can still use FSR in supported games. If you have an AMD card then you also get the option in the driver settings of enabling it globally for every game, whether it has support built in or not.

Ray tracing is present and works just fine, though their performance is about a generation behind. It’s perfectly usable if you keep your expectations in line with that though. Especially in well optimized games like DOOM Eternal or light ray tracing like in Guardians of the Galaxy. Fully path traced lighting like in Cyberpunk 2077 is completely off the table though.

Obviously AMD has hardware video encoders. People like to point out that the visual quality of then is lower than Nvidia’s but I always found them perfectly serviceable. AMD’s background recording stuff is also built directly into their driver suite, no need to install anything extra.

While they do have their own GPU-powered microphone noise removal, a la RTX Voice, AMD does lack the full set of tools found in Nvidia Broadcast, e.g. video background removal and whatnot. There is also no equivalent to RTX HDR.

Finally, if you’ve an interest in locally running any LLM or diffusion models they’re more of a pain to get working well on AMD as the majority of implementations are CUDA based.

Land usage is also a huge concern with hydro power. Pumped hydro storage means permanently flooding an area to create the reservoir, which carries many above and beyond just the destruction of whatever was there before. The flooded land has vegetation on it, which is now decaying under water. This can release all sorts of unpleasantness, most notably mercury.

They don’t even have to go down. Staying stable or even going up at a consistent rate are both considered failure states, or at least unfavorable. If the rate of growth is not itself growing then they start worrying.

It’s insane.

GOG games are DRM free and do not need to be cracked. They’re freely shareable as-is.

The question is whether the crossplay works between the Steam and GOG versions, and a quick Google shows that the answer is yes.

Last time this came up it was my position that it was ambiguous and needed clarification and had someone accuse me of taking a prescriptive stance and imposing rules contrary to how things were actually being done. You’re completely correct, but I want to explore it a bit more.

It’s not like YouTube didn’t also need to do these things, but they had the advantage of being more or less the first to even try, therefore had the fairly substantial benefit of being able to grow gradually as their traffic volume increased from the late 00s into the early 10s.

Any YouTube competitor entering the scene needed to hit the ground running and didn’t have the luxury of being able to gradually scale up. They need to match YouTube immediately, or be considered an inferior platform.

YouTube was first, and everyone else needed to play catch-up with a headwind.
