It’s a specialized scientific equipment business. I build some equipment, do some customization and repairs on their party equipment, loan other equipment, train users… A high capital business where I wagered everything on my own success. It was six months between my first two customers, and now I average about six hours.

I’m not rich. But I was born poor and am no longer poor. The Birth Lottery blessed me with a brain, and with that as my only asset, I learned esoteric skills which I can parley into a niche career.

But more importantly, the social safety net in my country allowed me to get an education without becoming a wage slave for the rest of my life. Without that, I couldn’t have pulled this escape from poverty off.

I now run my own business. We have no employees – only owners who have self-invested. Our business is growing and I anticipate a comfortable retirement. Haven’t got rich off the working class either.

So, thank you Canada for the opportunities. I’ve tried to make the most of them.

Self-identification is such a bizzare polarized issue. On one side, you have sexual self-identification being embraced by the same people who bemoan cultural self-identification. I don’t understand this cognitive dissonance. Alas.

I actually miss SVN. It had a lot of issues, yes, but the cognitive barrier was so much smaller. When I have a merge error in git, I basically just delete my repo and make a new one…

If you look at the dot com bubble, there’s a lot of corporate colonization in the 90s. Many of them didn’t survive their stock crashing in 2000 (pets.com is a good example). Some things were not able to be launched until the internet infrastructure supported it properly (YouTube, for example), so yes some things do date to the 00s. But largely, by 1998, the internet was already on its current trajectory.

The reason Google was so disruptive at the time was that they didn’t charge websites to get listed – it was a business model that relied on actually finding what people were searching for. The fact that this model was disruptive at the time tells you how corporate it was even by then.

Pro-tip: sort All by New Comments. Yes, if you refresh, you get repeat content, but you also find the unusual stuff and the repeated stuff is where the conversations are happening.

This is me. I still go there for two or three subs that don’t have critical mass here (thus no conversation). The upcoming weighted sort algo should help a little, drawing people to smaller community content.

But I also moderate a reasonably large sub there, and have stopped attempting to grow anything there – just spam removal, manually.

But I don’t post new content there. Sometimes I’ll reply on a comment chain. Here I post new content and interact a lot more.

I’m using Lemmy Connect as my app (like 98% of it). What’s interesting is, when I use Reddit I refuse to use their app, so I’m using old Reddit, in a browser. But I catch myself attempting to swipe on comments using the Lemmy Connect gestures.

So I’ve definitely flipped to Lemmy first.
