I’ve never heard a rational defense of moral relativism that made any sense. If there are no moral truths, then serial killers have done nothing wrong for example. If a moral relativist admits that there are some moral truths, then moral relativism is completely indefensible. At that point, you’re just arguing over what is and what is not a moral truth.

Well I didn’t want to have a bio, but Lemmy doesn’t let me null it out, so I guess I’ll figure out something to put here later.

61·3 years agoHe probably doesn’t deserve a devil’s advocate, but that said, I’m pretty sure Louis didn’t masturbate in public, but rather during phone calls and in private in front of unconsenting or at least not explicitly consenting company, from the accounts I’ve read. I’m not defending it because it’s abusive and wrong, but it’s also not quite the same thing as masturbating in public.
Ah, I’ll be honest, I don’t actually read these emails closely often, but you’re right. Looking now through my inbox archive, I see that Amazon added an “I don’t know the answer” link in their email sometime between April and May of 2019. It looks like initially they had the text somewhat smaller for the “I don’t know the answer” link, but they seem to have increased the text size to match the “Answer/Respond to this question” link sometime between February and March 2020. At any rate, those emails were going out for many years before 2019 without an “I don’t know…” link and I think they could still probably make it clearer to people what they’re actually doing by posting “I don’t know” as an answer.
Yeah, I would really like to see them either stop doing that or make it very clear in their email that you should only respond if you know the answer to the question.
If it came out today, it might hit that sweet spot of being too edgy for liberal parents and too “woke” for conservatives
Google Photos nags me to let it clean them up and I usually let it 🤷
Oh come on now, that’s not their sole goal in life…
They also want to make sure poor people don’t get everything they need.
I really appreciate this response, I have basically no interest in spending time watching other people play games when I don’t even have time to play them myself very often. As a result, I have no idea who the celebs are in this realm of culture, so thank you for getting me up to speed!
Aside from being tone deaf, I think this is bad advice. Common breakfast foods are fairly cheap comparatively and I’m pretty sure most nutritionists recommend eating something for breakfast to kickstart your metabolism. If I were skipping/reducing a meal, it would be lunch.

11·3 years agoThe addition of the delta symbol is exactly the kind of creativity we need around here. I’d give you Lemmy silver if I could afford it.
Who is Dream and, more particularly, what’s the connection to those sneakers?
This is a good “I am Very Smart” candidate which surprisingly doesn’t seem to have an active community here on Lemmy yet…and I might be just fine with that now that I think about it. It seemed like half the posts there on Reddit either were mean spirited, called out the wrong side in an argument, or were actually smart.
What’s ironic is it’s usually the type of people with your type of attitude that I miss and grieve for the most.
I don’t see how this meme would be better with an audio cable that doesn’t have a separate physical signal path for left and right channels. The Van Gogh panel wouldn’t make any sense.
That was my immediate thought as well. Like they have fogging glass, but nasty ass toilets with optional toilet seat?
Absolutely, and by that point they’ve released new content and side quests in the Cum Box update.

3·3 years agoI agree, and I think categorizing generations is always going to be messy. But I think the Oregon Trail Generation/Xennials just seems to be more distinct than most other micro generations. I’m pretty much in the middle of the commonly accepted millennial age bracket and would still consider myself more of a Xennial based off the broad characteristics that have been described, despite falling outside that rough '86 cutoff by a couple years. I know part of it is probably due to how much Millennials get shat on, but it feels like the “Millennial Generation” is an especially weird generation where half the people that are supposedly in it don’t feel like they belong with the other half and many resent the label. To me, the Millennials born after '90 seem quite distinct from those born before '87 and I feel like I’m in the middle and identify more with the Xennials. I’m no sociologist, though, this is just my limited subjective experience.

4·3 years agoMillennials are a strange generation because I feel like elder millennials and younger millennials are kind of divided by whether they remember a time before the Internet went mainstream or not.
To your point, another dividing line for Millennials and Gen Z is that Gen Z kids’ first phone was probably a smart phone and they probably got theirs a couple years younger on average than millennials.

372·3 years agoThis is the “scene kid” aesthetic that was popular in the mid aughts. They barely made the millennial cutoff as far as I’m concerned and they’re not very representative of our generation as a whole.
It all starts with defining what morality means. The way I would define morality is behaviors that maximize flourishing for sentient creatures and minimize suffering. While it is clearly difficult to quantify flourishing and suffering, there are behaviors that clearly cause suffering in this world and impede the opportunity for flourishing and, by the above definition of morality, are plainly immoral. The way I see it, rejecting the possibility that flourishing and suffering can be quantified at all is the only argument that can be made against moral absolutism. Everything else is just quibbling over relevant variables across the spectrum of available behaviors to determine what makes them more or less moral. There is always a behavior that is objectively the more moral choice, but it might be difficult in practice to determine which is the more moral choice due to a lack of available relevant data. The absence of said data shouldn’t be assumed to be because it doesn’t/can’t exist, but rather that it hasn’t been collected. Rejecting the idea that there is always a more moral behavior amongst several choices is the dangerous assumption, imo.
