  • I do love having to give a 2 paragraph disquisition of caveats about how I didn’t vote for either major party candidate in 2016 or 2020, before I can make literally any comment on either of these people or the current state of US politics, lest I be downvoted into oblivion or accused of being an evil Repub shill.

Ironically when we do this on Lemmy we are qualifying ourselves to a cohort of mostly people who didn’t vote at all, or aren’t even Americans.

Another important thing to note is that you only benefit from this if you have so many itemized deductions that you can do better than the standard deduction. The mortgage interest alone isn’t going to do that in a vast majority of cases. Since legislation in 2017, a lot of the tax advantage of owning a home was reduced.

The OP is wrong on every conceivable level.

Yeah except probably not. Its not like billionaires have a savings account with $1,000,000,000 sitting there collecting 5% interest (much less sitting collecting even less interest in a checking account…)

They have a net worth based on tons of diverse (non-liquid) assets like securities, company ownership stakes, real estate, art, etc. To say nothing of their holdings in trusts and shell companies abroad, or whatever the latest tax avoidance strategies are.

  • This is correct. The motion of the people is relative to the Portal. It doesn’t matter if the trolley is accelerating the Portal towards them or something is accelerating them towards the Portal. Therefore they accelerate out of the other side with some retained momentum. Technically it probably resembles something in between pictures A and B.

This reminds me of the experiment about whether an airplane could take off from a treadmill.
