Memes@lemmy.ml•My friends never got Vine but all love TikTokEnglish
44·2 years agoIt wasn’t about video length, it was about the Twitter leadership at that time being categorically incapable of monetizing any of their products.
Combine that with the orders-of-magnitude higher cost of running Vine compared to the bird, and it was always either going to be sold off or shut down.
It’s easy to forget that this was back in the time when these companies thought they were changing the planet for the better and drinking their own Kool aid by the gallon.

Memes@lemmy.ml•Blockchain: the wave of the futureEnglish
2421·2 years agoBingo. Capitalism has thus far rejected the blockchain, which is generally evidence that it doesn’t solve an important problem either efficiently, safely or cheaply.
“technically this thievery isn’t covered by law”
"technically this what?”
"OBJECTION!”
Appreciate it being current affairs, but there’s been a visible shift in the lean of the content on this sub past few days
The 1 day old account speaks to that.
Couldn’t manage the straight answer, huh? I suppose that would categorise you as “troll”?

Memes@lemmy.ml•No I won't feel bad about having ad blockersEnglish
5·3 years agoI concur. There’s a sweet spot for ads where they are mostly tolerable. We haven’t been in it for a long time though.

Memes@lemmy.ml•No I won't feel bad about having ad blockersEnglish
293·3 years agoThere were less than 200 websites in 1993 when the first paid ad was introduced shortly thereafter. There were over 100k websites by the end of 1995.
So you’re kind of right, but ads have been part of the Internet for 30 years. And half of the internet that we know today wouldn’t have survived if this wasn’t the case.
