Great question. When I hear people I think that’s used to draw attention to common relevant traits “people of England” for example. Persons is more a group of less related individuals or at least with less relevant similarities “persons of interest” for example

That’s just naturally what keeps others engaged. Per of it is that people like talking about their own life and interests. Part of it is just keeping the conversation going. But it’s definitely a IRL conversation/charisma pro tip
People are people. We just always demonize the ones we disagree with. But it’s that demonization of others that makes people commit true evil acts
That’s a good take, but I think it is more likely a sarcastic comment. A comment that Australia should be a democratic government with rights but now it’s a police state that no longer resembles democracy (in his angry opinion)
