Some of the “open” models seem to have augmented their training data with OpenAI and Anthropic requests (I. E. they sometimes say they’re ChatGPT or Claude). I guess that may be considered piracy. There are a lot of customer service bots that just hook into OpenAI APIs and don’t have a lot of guardrails, so you can do stuff like ask a car dealership’s customer service to write you Python code. Actual piracy would require someone leaking the model.

It’s also the reason prediction markets have been so heavily regulated (until recently), because they can easily incentivize assassinations while adding plausible deniability.

In the U.S., it’s from anger at the Democratic party. Mostly anger at, “when they go low, we go high,” “reach across the aisle,” “we need a strong Republican party,” tolerance paradox, and that kind of stuff. Liberal economics isn’t really compatible with leftism either.

Yeah, torrents usually run 100-300KiB/s. I guess not too bad for smaller files. About an hour or three per GB.

I mean, you can be sued for anything, but it will get thrown out. Like, I guess the MPAA could offer a movie for download, then try to sue the first hop they upload a chunk to, but that really doesn’t make any sense (because they offered it for download in the first place). Furthermore, the first hop(s) aren’t the people that are using the file, and they can’t even read it. If people could successfully sue nodes, then ISPs and postal services could be sued for anything that passes through their networks.

Onion-like routing. It takes multiple hops to get to a destination. Each hop can only decrypt the next destination to send the packet to (i.e. peeling off a layer of the onion).

Hmm, so looks like around 100kB/s. That’s about what I remember (100kB/s - 300kB/s).

I’ve recently been trying out Tribler, and it’s much faster than the last time I tried it (I’ve seen 2MB/s on popular torrents, but around 500kB/s on less popular). Not sure if there are simply more exit nodes with more bandwidth now or if there are more people on the Tribler network seeding.

I’ve put together 2 computers the last couple years, one Intel (12th gen, fortunately) and one AMD. Both had stability issues, and I had to mess with the BIOS settings to get them stable. I actually had to under-clock the RAM on the AMD (probably had something to do with maxing-out the RAM capacity, but I still shouldn’t need to under-clock, IMO). I think I’m going to get workstation-grade components the next time I need to build a computer.

Is what humans have always done. Capitalism has so many contradictions, we have entire legal and regulatory systems and social programs in place to make it viable, and governments still have to bail it out with our tax dollars every 10 years or so.

A strong central government—the state—controls all aspects of economic production, and provides citizens with their basic necessities, including food, housing, medical care and education.

I think that article is inaccurate. I’ve always seen communism described as a state-less society.

Where I live, I would still need to pay for a VPN to use torrents. I’ve been banned from an ISP before for torrenting (thankfully, I had multiple ISPs available for me).

At the moment, I just “pay” legally because I get a few “free” streaming plans from my mobile provider and ISP. Occasionally, I just use a free streaming site if I really want to watch something that’s not available to me. Every once in a while, I try anonymous p2p such as Tribler or torrenting over I2P, but it’s still extremely slow, unfortunately. I’ve never used Usenet, but I think it’s about the same price as a VPN or seedbox would be?

I still find ACAB cringe inducing, and a bad slogan, but that’s an interesting origin I did not know about. I agree with most of what you’re saying.

I think the phrase “All Cops Are Bastards” seems to focus on cops/people, and not the institution of policing. I’m not sure if it’s effective messaging or not. Maybe it helps with striker or protestor solidarity, IDK.

I think police hold back organized crime (currently, in the U.S.). They maintain a “monopoly on violence.” I think if all police suddenly disappeared, other gangs would quickly take over the job. I.e. forcing people to pay them for “protection,” and stuff like that. This currently happens in many parts of world, and has happened in the U.S. in the past, so I don’t think it’s some far-out idea. As bad as the system currently is, I think a mafia or cartel controlling things would be worse. U.S. police, generally, don’t engage in racketeering or execute you without a trial (it does happen, but is not generally the case).

Don’t get me wrong, I think the current system is evil too, and it needs to be torn down and rebuilt in a radically different way. I agree with thr concept that police currently function mostly to protect capital and the ruling class, and are, themselves, a gang of sorts. But, I think a society will always need to maintain some kind of “police” to remove people who cause harm to others (who would then be rehabilitated, if possible).
