Did the lady try to talk to her neighbor first?
OOP does not clarify.
But.
I have seen what happens when you put cardboard boxes whole in the cardboard recycling bin: it’s “full” immediately!
I have also seen people who do not remove the styrofoam filling before dumping them.
Or don’t even bother putting them inside the bin, just leaving it by the side.
All that gets my blood boiling. This casual carelessness because “it’s trash, so what?”Again, the first step should always be to point this out to newcomers, but.
The fact that OOP basically says “cardboard is nothing” and says they’d burn it instead tells me they just might be the asshole here.
The neighbor should’ve just talked to OP first.
But yeah, how hard is it for people to flatten their cardboard? Dare I say, it is even fun sometimes getting to stomp on it.
OOP didn’t bother to remove the address stickers, a minor effort that would have protected them from this very situation, and if they didn’t bother to do even that…
That said, going straight to the legal system in this situation is also an asshole move. Definitely a case of “we’re probably not getting the whole story, but how would we even know?”
Who tf removes adress stickers before getting rid of trash in their own trashbin
The people in your house already know where you live and whats your name
It’s a privacy measure for recycling specifically that I thought was commonplace. Maybe not in Germany.
Not that it really matters
But where do you think it’s commonplace?
Yea, I got a slight tingle here of OOP not being entirely without a fault on this one. But then again, my flavour of the ‘tism makes me meticulously fold and compact all of my trash to avoid any wasted space.
That the Deutschlanders in the comments are talking about how “he’s no angel” really does say it all.
9/10 times it’s a legit problem, the neighbour would just ask you nicely. If some nutjob writes you an invoice, you can safely ignore it. Going through someone’s trash and photographing indentifying information on the other hand is a felony, so OOP might’ve just found a way to finance that lawyer for themselves.
But this is one side of a story in which the neighbour went from 0 to lawyer with no warning and OOP (presumed innocent and tidy) is apparently fed up with the entire country because of that. Seems to me pretty escalatory by the only side presenting the narrative.
So giving the benefit of the doubt to the othe side: if you are a messy tenant and do not listen to reason, good riddance to you.
If some nutjob writes you an invoice, you can safely ignore it
Disagree: You cannot safely ignore this, because it is not a normal invoice and not some primitive nutjob.
There is a lawyer behind it, and this lawyer wants to get paid. Something that does not go away by itself.
you can ignore it if it isn’t a court mandated order. the lawyer wants to be paid, but they don’t need to be paid by OOP. they’re perfectly fine being paid by the harassing neighbor, which is what will happen eventually. there are always some of these harassment cases, and generally they go away if you just ignore them because there is no legal backing. the lawyer just scares you into compliance and if you pay that gets seen as an admission of guilt. there are several types of legal letters but most of them don’t require responding at all.
It is just a lawyer - they can ask and demand anything they like. If it’s unjustified (like here for example) just ignore it.
If it’s something from COURT, you HAVE to answer it. But lawyers - don’t give them more credit than they deserve
We all know OP didn’t fold his boxes at all and just stuffed them in there, blocking up the system. Every time the lady wanted to use the paper container it would be blocked and she would have to reach in there and remove all of his shit. Then properly collapse the boxes and put them back. OP has also been told multiple times to fix his shit and there is a sign above the paper container as well.
The exact same thing happened where I work. Some idiot would just stuff an unfolded box in the paper container and would block it for everyone.
that’s just ragefiction, none of this is mentioned in the og post
So we should take everything OP says at face value, even though that seems like it’s pretty insane?
You and me both know that people like the old lady in the post exist. I’d also assume that someone who collects compost separately from restmüll will probably fold their boxes in a rational manner.
If you think that people exist that DIRECTLY run to a lawyer over cardboard boxes you also believe in the existence of Nigerian princes making you a millionaire for just a few bucks.
Edit: Since people can’t be bothered to read properly I highlighted the KEY WORD in the above sentence.
Of course they exist. How probable is it to meet one vis-a-vis? Quite low. How probable is it too read about a third party encounter on a large social media platform?
How probable is it that the story that OOP told is a lie and there were interactions before?
From his own weasel-wordy description OOP was regularly blocking the shared paper bin of an apartment building. How probable is it that no other neighbor complained before the alleged letter?
How probable is it that OOP is lying to make him appear as some poor victim?
He was accused of blocking the paper bin.
How probable is it that OOP is lying to make him appear as some poor victim?
Considering she involved a lawyer instead of the apartment manager, not as high as she being delulu.
Or maybe you just don’t meet many people.
My grandmother tried to sue a neighbor over leaves falling from the neighbor’s tree.
Your grandma might have had a chance in court depending on the exact situation.
If there are tree branches growing over her property, then most of the time the neighbor is forced to cut them after is is notified about it.
If its just a few leaves getting blown over by the wind then chances are rather slim, but its still possible she would win. Depends on your jurisdiction, here it has to be a severe impairment of her ability to use the property.
It was leaves from the opposite property line blowing in the wind.
Multiple times a day she would be yelling at my grandfather to go pick them up off the lawn (which was perfectly flat and devoid of anything living except super small grass) and would often go out to the porch just to complain, loudly, about how SHE has to do all this work to “get things presentable”
My grandmother was just awful.
Ländle of the Kehrwoche, home of the Spießbürger. Machste nix. /s
„Wir sind hier nicht in Vietnam! Wir sind in Baden-Württemberg, da gibt es Regeln!“

Point number one: throwing boxes into the bin with your address labels on is fucking dumb.
Point number two: throwing boxes into the paper bin without flattening then is also fucking dumb.
Obviously, if that’s all the guy did (provided this story has any basis in reality at all) sending a letter from a lawyer is totally over the top and in no way justified. I also doubt any lawyer would stoop to that, but then, they’re lawyers, so there’s that. On top of that, unless that neighbour owns the property, they have absolutely no business trying to enforce any rules there.
All in all, either there’s more to this story, or OP met an actual crazy person. These exist everywhere and their craziness manifests in a variety of ways. Sending legal letters is one of the less scary ones, if you ask me.
Why should I have to pull off the DHL stickers of my cart board boxes before I throw it into the trash???
Because then anyone who is able to come to your house can just find your address for free
Because ppl go through trash to find useful data which they can use to steal your identity.
If you consider yourself careless in regards to your privacy, you should probably presume to already have a criminal record to your name in countries you’ve never visited.
Privacy.
Just fold your boxes like a decent person. It’s not hard. Have some consideration for your fellow humans.
